Victoria’s Advice On How To Choose A Photographer – Essential Things To Consider
You’ve decided to book a photo session with a professional photographer, but where to start? I’ve prepared some useful tips on how to choose “right” photographer for you and your family. If you’ve looked through a dozen websites already but still full of doubts … stop and do a deep breath. Maybe you haven’t found the right fit. Or maybe, you’re simply lost trying to shift through all of the information you came across. Choosing the “right” photographer can feel downright overwhelming. Trust me, I get it.
I always say that following your intuition is the best method, but I hear you, sometimes it’s just not that easy. So, here are few of the most important questions to ask yourself, so you can choose the photographer that fits you best.
Start with the question – Does their work make me feel something?
It’s important to LOVE the moments, the mood and the feelings in their photographs. That’s a good sign, if looking through their website left you daydreaming about how incredible your photographs would look if you would hire them. So, please ask yourself… “Do they have a photographic style that I connect with?” – This is both the simplest and most important questions.
Continue with the question – Does their work reflect the things that are important to me?
One website may be filled with photographs that emphasize feeling – wind blowing mom’s hair when she is hugging her little one, a husband’s gentle touch as he lifts his wife’s chin for a kiss, kids running forward to horizon or the squinty-eyed and blissful grin of a little girl wrapped in her father’s arms. Another may have images of people looking directly into the camera and smiling. This isn’t a one size fits all experience. If you want someone who will preserve you the story and capture your love in a way that evokes emotion, photographer number one would be the better choice. If you want a formal, posed portrait, the second photographer is for you.
One more important question – Will I enjoy communicating and spending time with this person?
If you have already been in touch with them, consider how those interactions made you feel. Were you excited about the process after speaking with them or was there some uncertainty? Were they willing to communicate with you in the way that you prefer (email, phone or at an in-person consult)? If you haven’t had any communication with them yet, consider this: Do they have personal details on their website that you connect with? Do you get a sense of their personality from the things they say throughout their website or Instagram posts? If yes, and you feel like you already know them – you’re on the right track!
Next question – Is the quality of the work displayed on their website consistent?
If a couple of their images left you covered in goosebumps, take time to look through their portfolio. All professional photographers choose the best from the best images for their website, which were collected during the years. If you are still hypnotized with their photographs I’d say you’ve probably found a good fit. But if you’re seeing photographs on their website that are causing you to have doubts, don’t hurry to hire! The work on a photographer’s website should be a direct representation of the work that they produce, so if there are photographs that are less than the quality you would be happy to receive, they aren’t the one for you.
