Finding the right breastfeeding consultant can make a tremendous difference during the early weeks and months of parenthood. Whether you are preparing for your baby’s arrival, experiencing feeding challenges, or simply looking for expert guidance and reassurance, professional lactation support can help you reach your feeding goals with confidence.
As part of my June series featuring local lactation consultants, I am excited to introduce Amanda Petry from Milka Lactation. In this interview, Amanda shares her experience, practical advice, and insights into the most common breastfeeding challenges families face. She also discusses when to seek support, common breastfeeding myths, and how personalized lactation care can help parents feel more confident throughout their feeding journey.

Q&A with Amanda, the Breastfeeding Consultant Behind Milka Lactation

Tell us about yourself and your business. How did your business get started?
My business started because I have practiced as a breastfeeding consultant in local hospitals and pediatric clinics for 8+ years, and wanted to be more active in supporting my community with in-home lactation support. There is such a benefit in meeting a family where they are most comfortable.

What services do you provide for expecting and new families?
I provide prenatal and postpartum in-home and virtual lactation consultations.

What are the most common breastfeeding challenges you help families overcome?
The most common challenges I help with include pain with breastfeeding or pumping, concerns about milk supply, weight gain concerns, premature infants, and breastfeeding multiples.

What is one piece of advice you wish every expecting mother knew before her baby arrives?
One piece of advice I wish every expecting mother knew is to seek help early on! Even if you aren’t sure there is anything wrong, it’s better to have a visit and get reassurance than to wait and see what happens and then have to play catch-up if something wasn’t quite right.

When should a family consider reaching out to a lactation consultant?
A family should reach out whenever they have questions or concerns. Friends, family, and social media can all have conflicting information that is often well-intentioned but not always accurate or tailored to your specific situation or goals. I create a plan with you based on a thorough assessment of feeding, your goals, and my evidence-based expertise.

What are some common myths about breastfeeding that you would like to debunk?
Some common myths are that having a freezer full of breast milk is necessary or the norm, pumping is easier than latching, or that breastfeeding for comfort is a bad habit!

What does a typical consultation look like?
A typical consultation involves weighing your baby, assessing baby’s intake with breastfeeding, observing pumping or bottle feeding, or any combination of these! I offer in-person visits primarily and virtual when desired.

What services do you offer? What is the typical investment for families who work with you, and do you accept insurance?
I offer insurance-covered lactation consultations with no out-of-pocket cost with participating plans. I am partnered with The Lactation Network and Wildflower Health to help keep the process smooth.
