Meet Tracy – Certified Postpartum Doula, Owner & Founder of Sweet Dreams Doula
How did you become a doula?
17 years ago I was working in labor & delivery as a surgical assistant. I loved caring for our patients and their growing families through delivery and postpartum. A few colleagues and I started offering continued postpartum care at home after discharge and my passion was born! Sweet Dreams Doula was launched in January 2019.
What’s your favorite thing about being a doula?
Being able to provide families with the postpartum support, education, rest, and encouragement they deserve.
What’s the most challenging part of being a doula?
Honestly, it’s leaving my families when our time is up. At this point, I have hundreds of extended families throughout the triangle!
What do you think are the benefits of having a postpartum doula?
Every family has different postpartum needs and we are there, day or night, to support them in many different ways. We provide a non-judgmental listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, arms to give a hug, laughter to share, hands to help with chores, rest for tired parents, attention for siblings, and of course infant education and care.
Do you provide lactation support as a part of Sweet Dreams Doula services?
Do you provide lactation support? Yes, I am an Infant Feeding Specialist and Mariah is an IBCLC student so we provide evidence-based support but we always refer to an IBCLC for anything out of our scope of practice.
What is the strangest request as a doula have you ever had?
I’ve been asked, “since you are breastfeeding your own child, do you offer wet nurse service?” ……that was a very polite but firm NO haha.
Do you think having a doula is necessary for all pregnant women and new mothers?
I do! It should be a covered part of our healthcare system for every family!
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is considering becoming a doula, what would it be?
Do it, it’s the most rewarding work you will ever do!!! Also, research the company you are considering training with to be sure your values and beliefs align.
Would you like to add any more information for moms-to-be?
I think as expecting parents we get so caught up in trying to get all the baby gear and gadgets and overlook setting up support! Doula support is a wonderful shower gift and will by far be your favorite gift so ask for support!
