About WakeMed Labor and Delivery

Labor and Delivery mean it’s time for the great welcome of your baby into the world!  WakeMed obstetrics experts have thought of every detail so you can feel confident and excited about your big day.

WakeMed offers a flexible, family-centered atmosphere with modern, tasteful décor designed to make you feel safe and calm. Most importantly, WakeMed has the most up-to-date technology to assist you and your baby.

WakeMed offers home-like suites, as well as a multitude of various classes, and experts to guide and help you every step of the way.

WakeMed Birthing Classes

Only the best birthing classes, offered at WakeMed, will help you get a headstart on postpartum (shortly after birth) and newborn care. Learning how to properly care for an infant is vital since the baby is very vulnerable and dependent on their parents. It is important to understand how to handle the child in order to ensure their safety and well-being. Other than teaching the essentials, these classes will educate you on the various options available for delivery and care. They will help you coordinate with your team of specialists, and understand what birthing options are best for you.

The Raleigh, Cary, North Raleigh, and WakeMed Corporate Center Women’s Pavilions & Birthplaces provide classes with a comprehensive curriculum of pregnancy and childbirth, taught by experienced childbirth educators.

As a part of WakeMed labor and delivery services birthing classes assist expectant parents in successfully preparing for the arrival of their new baby.

Doula’s Services

WakeMed labor and delivery services now offer specially trained doulas to assist women through their pains. These doulas are among the most experienced in the field of childbirth, as they provide emotional, educational, and physical support to families prior to, during, and immediately following childbirth. Doulas collaborate with nurses and physicians to facilitate communication between the healthcare team, the patient, and family members during the birth. However, it is important to note that doulas are not licensed healthcare professionals, and cannot determine the condition of a baby.

For example: “During labor, doulas can provide comfort with pain relief techniques, such as breathing, relaxing, massage and laboring positions… Doulas act as an advocate for the mother, helping to follow or incorporate changes into the birth plan as needed, and enhancing communication between the mother and health care provider, ensuring she has a positive and safe birth. They never take the place of the father or support person but are there to complement and enhance their experience” (WakeMed Doula Services).

According to research, when a doula is present during labor, moms require less pain medication, have shorter labors, and require fewer interventions.

Breastfeeding Support

In addition to offering stellar support during pregnancy and birth, WakeMed labor and delivery services also have FREE Breastfeeding Support Groups that are led by certified lactation counselors and are designed to aid the mother with breastfeeding in the first year of life. These groups meet in-person every Monday from 10 am – 11:30 am at WakeMed Corporate Center at Highwoods and every Wednesday from 3 pm – 4:30 pm at WakeMed Apex Healthplex. Due to the recent pandemic, there is a pre-registration requirement.

Services such as open conversation, feeding, and weighing your baby are available.

WakeMed understands that it can be difficult for mothers to get out of the house, so they say that it is alright to arrive late to these sessions.

In case you can’t make it at all, they have a 14-page guide to breastfeeding to help guide you, even when you are not in the presence of experts.
